MECHANICAL ROYALTIES

Mechanical royalties are the reproduction of songs. Mechanical royalties must be paid by a third-party for the recording, manufacture, and distribution of copyright-protected music. Streams are collected by a party called a Mechanical Licensing Agent. The most popular being Harry Fox Agency (HFA) and SongTrust.

Digital mechanical royalties include:

• All mechanical royalties from Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming sites.

• All mechanical royalties from download stores like iTunes.

• All performance royalties from streaming services, radio, TV, live concert performances and much more.

• YouTube Publishing royalties for any video on YouTube that contains your song.

PERFORMANCE ROYALTIES

Public performance royalties are generated from the public performance copyright. Basically, a royalty is generated any time your song is played publicly anywhere. Performance Royalties are collected by Performing Rights Organizations (PRO) such as ASCAP, SESAC or BMI.

Performance mechanical royalties include:

• All performance royalties from live shows and when someone covers your song at a live show.

• All performance royalties from AM and FM radio.

• All performance royalties from network television, cable.

• All performance royalties from airplanes, stores, bars, restaurants – wherever music is played to a substantial amount of people and is open to the public.
